Powder Tower

Powder Tower

from $360.00

The Powder Tower is one of many impressive historic towers spread throughout Prague. It was built in the XV century to serve as an entrance gate into the city. The city council gave Vladislav II the tower as a coronation gift. It has been used for coronation ceremonies as a passage point on the way to St. Vitus Cathedral. Gunpowder was stored here in the XVII century, hence the curious name.

I was admiring the elegant structure when a street vendor started blowing bubbles and teasing me. I got busy exploring different angles with my camera and observing the way light was coming through. Looking at the finished print at my studio, a colleague pointed out that the two main elements on this composition are in direct contrast: the soft temporal water bubbles against the solid stone structure. This matches the light and dark visual contrast of the image.
