Visiting the Dohany Street Synagogue, in Budapest was an incredibly moving experience. This is the largest synagogue in Europe, second in the world.

In 1944, the Dohány Street Synagogue was part of the Jewish Ghetto and served as shelter for many hundreds. Over two thousand of those who died in the ghetto from hunger and cold during the winter 1944-1945 are buried in the courtyard of the synagogue. That they were only a few months away from liberation makes the event even more heart breaking. As we contemplated the serene beauty of this haunting space, I heard a man weeping behind me. This frame was captured as I absorbed the deep meaning of the place's heavy history. The sculpture is a remembrance memorial for those who perished as if being hurdled into an abyss.

It is remarkable that this is the place where once stood the house in which Theodor Herzl, the famed Zionist was born.
